Facing Housing Trouble? This $42M Program Supports Veterans With Legal Aid

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is expanding its efforts to fight veteran homelessness with a powerful tool: $42 million in grants through the Legal Services for Veterans (LSV) Grant Program.

Instead of giving cash directly to veterans, the VA is funding organizations that offer free legal services, services that can make the difference between stable housing and life on the streets.

What Is the LSV Grant Program?

First launched as a pilot in 2023, the LSV Grant Program is now scaling up.

Organizations can receive up to $500,000 each over two years, from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2027, to deliver legal services to veterans at risk of homelessness.

Applications are due July 7, 2025, at 4 p.m. ET, via Grants.gov.

Who Can Apply for These Grants?

Eligible applicants include:

  • Nonprofit legal aid organizations

  • Tribal governments and tribal-affiliated legal entities

  • Local and state government agencies

  • Faith-based groups and community organizations

To qualify, organizations must:

  • Be registered on SAM.gov

  • Offer at least four types of legal services

  • Focus efforts in underserved or rural areas, including tribal communities

Who These Grants Aim to Help

The legal services funded by this program are designed for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including those who:

  1. Live in shelters or transitional housing
  2. Are unsheltered or living in unstable conditions
  3. Face eviction or legal issues impacting housing stability

Veterans must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and received a discharge other than dishonorable.

What Legal Services Will Be Covered?

Organizations receiving funding will provide legal assistance in critical areas such as:

  • Eviction defense and tenant-landlord disputes

  • Upgrading military discharge status

  • Child support or custody issues

  • Access to VA benefits (disability, healthcare, etc.)

  • Expunging minor criminal records tied to housing barriers

  • Domestic violence protection orders
